Securing Hawai‘i's future with more affordable housing and more support to get our homeless population off the streets – for good.
Families who have lived in Hawai‘i for generations are being priced out or pushed onto the streets by the steep cost of living and the severe shortage of affordable housing. Doug supports urgent action and will leverage all available state and federal resources to create more affordable housing for Hawai‘i families, including:
- Developing more public and private projects with thoughtful community planning and an eye for the future.
- Empowering state and local housing agencies by giving them the flexibility to do more with the funds they receive.
- Fighting back against Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson's troubling agenda which will hurt Hawai‘i families who depend on federal housing programs.
- Ensuring 'affordable' housing units are actually affordable – and stay that way.
Hawai‘i has the highest rate of per capita homelessness in the nation. Doug believes we can, and we must, do a better job of giving Hawai‘i’s homeless community the support they need to get off the street and into housing – for good.
He will support an all-hands-on-deck approach from our federal, state, and local leaders to end homelessness across our state.
In Congress, Doug will fight to ensure Hawai‘i receives the federal funding we need to address the underlying causes of homelessness, such as the severe shortage of affordable housing, and having accessible mental health and substance abuse services in our communities.
