Banning 'Conversion Therapy'

February 19, 2018

No one should ever be made to feel there is something ‘wrong’ with them because of who they love or how they identify.

Yesterday, I testified in support of a measure to protect Hawai‘i’s LGBTQ community from damaging and discredited efforts to change their sexual orientation or gender identity through so-called 'conversion therapy.'

My support is based on my firmly held belief that no one should ever be made to feel there is something ‘wrong’ with them because of who they love or how they identify.

I am proud of my record fighting for the rights – and the dignity – Hawai‘i's LGBTQ community deserves. As Attorney General, I defended the Hawai‘i Marriage Equality Act in the Hawai‘i Supreme Court. I took on the Trump Administration to defend the right of transgender individuals to serve this country in uniform. And I led a coalition of 20 states to advocate for the rights of LGBTQ couples in the U.S. Supreme Court Case, Masterpiece Cake Shop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission.

You can count on me to continue working to break down every barrier to equal rights and for a future free from discrimination and hate.
