As the former Hawai‘i Attorney General, I am the best candidate to fight for Hawaii's progressive values in four controversial areas under attack right now in Washington, D.C. Decisions there on these four issues will impact Hawaii and the nation for a generation unless someone our leaders accountable.
- Gun Control - The manufacturing of three-dimensional guns in people's homes will become a reality nationwide unless Congress or the courts stop it. A movement to require states with common-sense gun regulations like Hawaii to extend reciprocity to persons coming into our state will take a wrecking ball to our own strict laws and historically low crime rate. I would be the first member of Congress from Hawaii with the law enforcement and legal background to defend Hawaii and stop senseless gun violence.
- Women's and LGBTQ Rights - Donald Trump's appointment of Brett Kavanaugh as the next U.S. Supreme Court justice signals a reversal of Roe v. Wade and will undo decades of decisions validating the rights of women and the LGBTQ community. As Attorney General, I sued the Trump administration over plans to defund Planned Parenthood and led 19 states in a U.S. Supreme Court filing supporting same-sex couples' rights in the Masterpiece Cake Shop case. I will staunchly advocate to not turn back the clock to oppressive times.
- Climate Change - The EPA's inaction and inactivity in the past 2 years in the face of global warming are inexcusable. I fought to protect our coral reefs and the largest marine monument in the world on behalf of the state of Hawaii. With the endorsement of the national organization, Ocean's Champions, I would fight to stop the greenhouse gas emissions that are heating up our world and causing permanent sea level rise.
- Immigration - Children being separated from parents. Detention centers referred to by federal officials as "summer camps." The administration selectively favoring Western Europe over other regions. As the first Attorney General in the nation to challenge the discriminatory Muslim ban, I have the national gravitas and acumen to fight for DREAMers protected under DACA, to fix our broken immigration system, and to stop the persecution of individuals solely due to their skin color or religion.
At this critical time in our nation's history, I believe I am the best person to fight for Hawaii's values in Washington D.C. I humbly ask for your vote.
